Chanthaburi is a town in eastern Thailand, about 250 km east of Bangkok by road — three to four hours' drive — and one of the country's main centres for cutting and trading coloured stone. It deals in both rough and finished gems, and its weekend gem market is one of the largest trading floors in Asia.

Much of what is sold in Bangkok passes through Chanthaburi first. Rough arrives from Africa and elsewhere, is cut and worked here, and moves on to Bangkok's offices — but a great deal is also sold finished in Chanthaburi itself, to buyers who come to the market for it. Buying here means buying closer to the processing. The market keeps its own weekend rhythm and trades largely in Thai, and the grading and treatment questions sit with the buyer rather than having been settled further down the chain.

Is Chanthaburi cheaper than Bangkok?
Prices can be lower, because there are fewer hands between the cutter and the buyer. Finished stones are sold here too, so the difference is not rough versus finished — it is how much of the checking has already happened. By the time a stone reaches a Bangkok office, more of the grading and treatment questions have usually been answered, and that work is part of what the Bangkok price reflects.
What is Chanthaburi known for?
Cutting, and a large weekend market trading both rough and finished stones. Historically it was a ruby and sapphire mining area; today its role is working and trading material that arrives from elsewhere, much of it African.
Can I visit as a foreign buyer?
Yes, the market is open and visitors are common. Plan around the weekend: Friday to Sunday, roughly 10am to 3pm, with Saturday the main trading day. The practical barriers are language and that the deeper stock is not on the tables — it is with people who already know you.
